SITE LOCATION
46-52 Mountain Street, Ultimo

George Wilcox & Co developed three story of stores on Mountain Street in 1911, where an additional storey was added to the building in 1919. From 1911 to 2001, the building was occupied by a number of businesses, including Dunlop Rubber Company in 1960-1968. In 2001, the building was converted into apartments.

The building has been slightly modified for maintenance on the exterior and interior of the building, whilst still paying tribute to its internal timber framed structure. However, it retains a strong visual character typical of the Edwardian Store buildings which once dominated the Ultimo/Glebe area.

Wilcox Location Plan
OVERVIEW

A two-story apartment created for a very special couple who are in their late 30's, Nina and Patrick Reid. A design which touches on recycled materials, graffiti art, and bold colours, all whilst paying tribute to the architecture of the building and respecting both the urban, and industrial characteristics of both the interior, and exterior of the building.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Nina and Patrick Reid are a couple in their late 30's, with no children, who are very social, active, and well travelled.

Nina is an art director for an advertising agency, whilst Patrick is a copywriter and a double-bass player, who works from home or from an office in the city.

This apartment pays tribute to the industrial, recycled, and raw textures which the building itself embodies. All existing ceilings are to remain, whilst all columns are to be conserved and untouched to acknowledge the heritage of the building.

The industrial style custom-made staircase has been added to connect the two floors of unit 2. The black powder coated steel and mesh balustrade, concrete stairs, and a glossy metallic black handrail work well together to compliment the surrounding design features found within unit 2.

Level 2 is compromised of a guest, and master bedroom, with custom-made wardrobes which have been constructed using glass and timber, again to compliment the other choices of materiality throughout the space.
