SITE LOCATION
ABANDONED TUNNELS, ST JAMES STATION
SYDNEY
St James is a heritage listed underground commuter railway station that is located on the City Circle, at the Northern end of Hyde Park in the Sydney central business district of New South Wales, Australia. It is served by Sydney Trains T2 inner West & Leppington, T3 Bankstown, & T8 Airport & South line services.
These tunnels of St James Station were built in the 1920s for proposed extensions and rail lines to the Western and Eastern suburbs. Currently, these platforms are used for storage. From the Southern disused platform, a locked steel gate blocks access to the tunnel which was converted for use as an air raid shelter during World War 2

OVERVIEW
An elegant and enduring 1930s inspired underground gin distillery, designed to awaken and excite your senses from start to finish. The consumer is encouraged to dive deep into Merivale’s persona of a luxurious and opulent character as they make their way through the grand entrance of the abandoned tunnels of St James Station. The furniture selection plays tribute to the era of the tunnel’s beginnings, reflecting a concept of luxury and sophistication. The rich materials evoke an intelligent finesse, drawing inspiration from the raw colours and textures of the botanic creations used within Merivale’s very own gin line.

CONCEPT BOARD

Drawing inspiration from the train tracks that line the floors of the Abandoned tunnels of St James Station.

Experimenting with multiple curves to help tie in the Art Deco aesthetic, whilst paying tribute to the location of the site.
